Year 9 Ypres Trip
On Wednesday 7 June, 46 Year 9 students & five staff, led by Mrs Young, went to Ypres to visit the First World War Trenches, the Menin Gate and Cemeteries. The trip was to give students a better understanding of the geography of the landscape, further their understanding of the conditions soldiers lived and fought in, and to pay their respects in the land where much of the fighting took place along the British and French Sector of the Western Front.
Year 9 visited Essex Farm Cemetery where Lieutenant-General, John MacCrae, who was a Canadian physician and poet, wrote his most famous of poems, In Flanders Field. Mrs Cornhill paid a fitting tribute, remembering all who gave their lives so future generations can live in peace, by reading McCrae’s poem at the cemetery. Mrs Young followed this by leading Year 9 into a minute silence. As a comparison, Year 9 then visited Langemark, a German cemetery dedicated sadly to those German students who were enlisted from universities. The day continued with a visit to the First World War trenches at Sanctuary Wood. Students also visited the In Flanders Fields Museum, where they were able to come into contact with many artefacts from the trenches.
The day was made extra special as many of our students were eager to share their own families’ military stories, all while sharing out the delicious chocolate we bought throughout the day!
