History

History

The History department staffing include:

  • Mrs N Begovic – Teacher of History & Religious Studies, & Assistant Head of Year
  • Mr L Pedder - Teacher of History & Religious Studies
  • Mr R Skinner – Teacher of Geography & Citizenship
  • Mrs E Young – Lead Teacher of History & Acting Lead of Religious Studies

The History Department is committed to inspiring, nurturing and challenging all students, so to become life-long learners and understand their place and responsibility as a global citizen in an ever-changing world.

Collectively, the department aim to deliver a History curriculum which is accessible to all.

To support students in their understanding on how History can give them an understanding of the world they live in, how their actions and choices impact on the world and develop resilience, support their understanding of various cultures and ideologies, and give them the skills they need to explore their identity. Students are challenged to ask questions, engage in moral debates, and justify decisions made by victors & decision-makers which have shaped generations and continue to impact on current & future generations, interlinking ideas and concepts. As they journey through the curriculum, students identify, develop, apply, and master core skills to equip them for tomorrow’s world, understanding that learning has no limits.

Beyond the curriculum, the History department run two clubs to further promote a love for learning. Global Detectives after school on Wednesdays where students take on a more hands-on approach to their learning with model making, and battle re-enactments and a Debate Club held on Thursday lunchtime where students engage in topical issues affecting the world we live in today. Students take part in the annual VIAT Public Speaking Inter-School Competition in April, where they battle their wits against a range of seen and unseen topics. In addition, the History department take an active lead on whole-school occasions such as Black History Month, Remembrance Day, Holocaust Memorial Day, and LGBT+History Month to support our student’s understanding of identify and self-worth and in turn their potential.

The department fosters strong collaborative links with other departments, such as:

  • Linked field trip to Ypres with the English department to support students understand the emotions behind the act of remembrance and giving those who died a voice and identify.
  • Links to key texts studied in English such as Animal Farm which compliments the study of the Russian Revolution.
  • Links with STEM subjects such as the study of the Industrial Revolution.
  • Links made to controversial topics in Religious Education upon where debates have made their mark on History such as Civil Rights, and medical ethics.
  • Links with Citizenship regarding ideologies and politics.
  • Understanding how to interpret graphs showing population models, linking to Maths skills.
  • Considering how past language has impacted on today’s society and in the making of Britain, such as Latin, Anglo-Saxon and Normans with Languages and Linguistics.

Curriculum Intent

Collectively, the department aim to deliver a humanities curriculum which is accessible to all. To support students in their understanding on how all three Humanities subjects, can give them an understanding of the world they live in, how their actions and choices impact on the world and develop resilience, support their understanding of various belief systems, and give them the skills they need to explore their identity. Students are challenged to ask questions, engage in moral debates, and justify decisions across the three Humanities, interlinking ideas and concepts. As they journey through the curriculum, students identify, develop, apply, and master core skills to equip them for tomorrow’s world.
