Empower Day- Safety
Last Friday was the first Empower Day of the school year and the first event with five year groups. The theme of the day was Safety and we had a range of interesting guest speakers and safety-related sessions.
All year groups took part in a St John’s Ambulance first aid session - something which we are proud to provide as part of our spiral PSHEE curriculum. Students in Year 7 leant basic first aid, the recovery position and CPR, using the Resus Annes to practice the lifesaving resuscitation technique. As they progress through the school, they learn about choking, serious bleeding, allergic reactions including anaphylaxis shock and chest pains associated with heart failure and coronary disease.
In addition, each year group had sessions that focused on personal safety including Prevent awareness, grooming, consent, contraception and womens’ safety. They also took part in sessions where the focus was on the growing concern of online safety for young people. These sessions also included sexting and the dark web.
The students were also very fortunate to have several excellent guest speakers, including Zara Rawlinson from The Panda Anti Racism Team, Alvin Shaw from the Maidstone Magistrates Court and Cairo Coombs from St.Giles in London, who gave a powerful talk about county lines and gangs, using his own personal experience of gang crime and its consequences to hit home the message to all.
The students enjoyed speaking to and sharing their experiences with all of our guests and that was reflected in the positive feedback from them all at the end of the day.
