Secondary Maths Challenge 2024
On Thursday, 21 November, four Year 10 students from SST proudly represented the school at the Secondary Maths Challenge hosted by Invicta Grammar School. Competing against eight teams from schools across the county, the students showcased their mathematical prowess, teamwork and resilience in a variety of challenging rounds.
The day kicked off with a strategic Nerdle challenge. Here, students had to use logic and deduction to guess a series of calculations, learning from each attempt as they received feedback on the accuracy and position of digits and operations. This engaging activity tested their critical thinking and problem-solving skills right from the start.
Next, the teams faced a series of exceptionally challenging mathematical problems designed to stretch their knowledge and determination. Despite the difficulty, SST students displayed perseverance and grit as they tackled the tricky questions head-on.
After a well-earned lunch break, the students moved into Round 3, where they were introduced to a completely new mathematical concept: the factorial. After learning the basics of this intriguing topic, the students worked through a series of factorial equations, simplifying them to single answers—a task that tested their ability to adapt and learn on the spot.
The day concluded with the Geometry Relay, a high-pressure round where teams had to carefully check their answers. With each incorrect guess costing two points, accuracy was critical. The SST team excelled, collaborating effectively and supporting each other throughout.
By the end of the competition, SST students had much to be proud of. While the final result placed them sixth out of ten teams, their performance highlighted their excellent teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and determination.
