Remembrance Day 2023
Once again, our SST family, students and staff came together on Friday 10 November for our Remembrance Service. This year, our service felt evermore humbling as we were honoured to be led into the service by veteran, Mr Robert Wickens, who now volunteers for the British Legion.
While the act of remembrance was to mark those who fell during the Great War, 1914-1918, over the last century, it has come to act as a moment of reflection, to remember those who have served in all kinds of conflict across the globe and those who continue to dedicate their lives to the act of Service, to keep all of humanity safe. Mr Royston reminded us, that while we may come from different backgrounds, places, and beliefs, we all value one another. Mr Royston also led the way for us to reflect on the current conflicts happening in our world, while Mrs Beales read John McCrae’s iconic and moving poem, In Flanders Fields. Head boy, Rohan J, and head girl, Lillie C, were superb with the laying down of the wreaths. Also, a special mention to the superb Eulalie who played The Last Post, leading the student body into the two-minute silence. They were accompanied by a host of students who were eager to represent the scouts and cadet’s corps by wearing their uniforms, with a special mention to Gethin J, 10V and Oscar S, 10E for their military salute to past, present and future soldiers. Special shout out to Mrs Gidley and Mrs Young, for making the event truly a humbling and special moment of reflection, giving thanks to those who take up the act of Service.
A special shout out must also go to Josh C, Amelia W, Dylan S, Semi K, and Harmony L, who helped our student body set the tone for the service by planning and delivering a series of Remembrance assemblies. In addition, once again, Matthew D, Jake W, Aidan C, and Harry N were absolutely brilliant with promoting the sale of poppies and raising money for the British Legion.
