Primary Languages Workshop
It was our pleasure to this week welcome a group of students from VIAT at Aylesford to a workshop hosted by Mrs Vincent, introducing students from Years 3-6 to the wonders of Linguistics and some of the unique features of French and Spanish.
We were so impressed with the way the students got to grips with the International Phonetic Alphabet, decoding words that had been written using these complex phonetic symbols. One student even attempted to write us an account of the workshop using the International Phonetic Alphabet below: can you decode it?
Having never studied French before, the students were fascinated by the way in which grammatical gender effects lots of different words in sentences describing their friends, with two different words for ‘my’ and four different words for ‘friend’ to chose between, and that’s even before we get on to the adjective! And in Spanish students’ prior knowledge shone through in the new topic of verb conjugation, with crosswords and wordsearches galore to complete!
Many thanks to Miss O’Dwyer at VIAT Aylesford for suggesting the workshop and to Miss Adams and Mr Stacey for accompanying the students.
