Year 8 Trip to Greenwich
On Wednesday 1 May, the Maths Department and History Department delivered a joint educational trip for Year 8. Students learnt how Maths and History work together on so many levels by visiting first the Royal Observatory and then the National Maritime Museum. The trip was designed to embed knowledge and understanding of the key modules Year 8 have learnt over the past two years. Students gained further insight into how the early ships of discovery relied on astronomy and mathematics to help navigate their way round the world, forging trade routes to new lands and serving the interests of the likes of the East India Company and notorious Transatlantic Slave Trade. Students learnt how it was essential for Europeans sailing the seas to have astronomical readings to aid cartography and timekeeping. Students particularly enjoyed viewing the Great Equatorial Telescope, the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom, and standing along the Meridian line with one foot in the East and one foot in the West. What a way to time travel!
