Empower Day 5
On Thursday, students took part in the penultimate Empower Day of the year. This term’s theme was Reform, Restore and Respect. Students enjoyed a day of interesting lessons and guest speakers, focusing on topical issues such as knife crime, county lines and online safety. Here are a few highlights from the day.
Year 7 and 8 were enthralled by Francis Oseiappiah, who shared his personal story of growing up on the notorious Broadmoor Farm Estate in north London, where as a teenager he became involved in petty crime, gangs and drug dealing. He described his experience of prison, and how on his release, he turned his life around through education. Francis now visits schools, using his story to encourage young people to make positive choices.
Year 9 and 10 enjoyed a talk from Kit Windsor, who was part of a four-female crew, aptly named ‘Ace of Blades’, that rowed across the Atlantic earlier this year. Together with three other ladies, Kit successfully completed the Atlantic crossing in 47 days, 7 hours and 27 minutes. During the challenge, the crew had to contend with 30-foot waves, weeks of sea sickness and lots of technical and safety issues.
In addition to the guest speakers, students also enjoyed lessons on online safety which were prepared and delivered by our IT prefects. Well done to Harry P and Harry F for planning the session, and to Siver, Ethan, Jack, Edward, Gabi, Abdul, Zach and Ruby for delivering.

Year 7 also learnt about democracy and how the UK parliament works, while students in Year 8, 9 and 10 debated whether children under 16 should be allowed to have smartphones, especially in light of the murder of Brianna Ghey and her mother’s campaign to see a change in the law regarding smartphones for under 16s. The students demonstrated great maturity while debating the pros and cons of this controversial topic.
