GCSE Geography Fieldtrip
On Friday, 10 and Wednesday, 15 May 2024, SST students undertaking GCSE Geography embarked on the inaugural GCSE field trip, as per the requirements of their paper 3 examinations. Students visited Hythe, a seaside town in the UK. On both days, students departed for the seaside at around 9.00am and we were incredibly lucky to have very good weather across the trips. During the day, students completed their physical fieldwork, assessing the impact and presence of longshore drift. For many, the opportunity to watch an orange be taken by the current was a real highlight! Students were also able to see multiple coastal management methods they have learned about in the classroom, including sea walls and beach nourishment. It was an excellent chance for students to draw links between the value of the land and the justification for why this area has been so heavily managed to protect against erosion. One group was lucky enough to visit Dymchurch, however Mr. Barnshaw discovered the website he used for tide times was very much inaccurate, as the tide soared in preventing the chance to measure groynes! However, this will end up being useful information to evaluate the effectiveness of the conclusions drawn. Students then visited the local town of Hythe, to assess whether tourism has had a positive impact on the town as part of their human fieldwork. Undertaking more data collection methods such as environmental quality surveys and questionnaires, some students took it upon themselves to ask creative questions to the locals such as “which is the best fish and chip shop here?”. Luckily, some students were also able to confirm this verdict and enjoyed this as a special coastal treat of a lunch! SST - where learning has no limits 2 The data collected and methods used will be evaluated and assessed in preparation for their exam in the classroom, and all 133 pupils enjoyed the chance to take their learning out of the classroom. Their attitude and behaviour, being such a large group, was excellent and it was a thoroughly enjoyable two trips out. We look forward to future Geography trips, for both GCSE and other year groups, in the future at SST!
