World book Day
The English Department enjoyed celebrating their favourite day of the year with a range of challenges for everyone to get involved in. As ever, our students’ engagement created a great buzz around reading during the day.
The day started off with the BookFace Competition in form time. Students’ investigative skills were put to the test as they had to piece together which teacher had disappeared behind their favourite book. It was very eye-opening to see how observant (or not) our students are! A total of 27 students, plus the whole of 10V, managed to accurately identify all 15 teachers. Well done!
At lunchtime, the library was buzzing with excitement for the next of this year’s World Book Day events: a scavenger hunt. Hidden around the room were ten well-known book characters for students to find, with the help of some cryptic clues provided by Miss Garland. It was amazing to see how resourceful and collaborative students were in solving the puzzle, including many students working together between year groups and consulting the shelves to identify characters with which they weren’t familiar. Although every student who participated received a sweet and an achievement point, congratulations go to Matilda S, Grace W, Erin P and Evie H, all in 8L, who were the only students able to find the final answer. Miss Garland would also like to say thank you to Molly M and Zachary L for helping out during a very busy lunchtime!
Throughout the day in their English lessons, Year 7 and 8 students came together to discuss their favourite books and hear about the books and places their English teachers like to read. We all enjoyed getting recommendations from each other and lots of us chose a similar reading place: outside, in the sunshine, ideally on a sunbed!
Students also got creative with their ‘Design a potato character’ competition. The challenge of turning a humble potato into their favourite book character may at first have been baffling, but, as always, our students came through and demonstrated their fantastic creative capabilities. It was a hard decision, but after much deliberation Phoebe S (7T) and Erin P (8L) are the worthy winners.
A huge well done to all SST students for getting involved and a massive thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a great success.
